German Garden Design Education in the Early 20th Century
- In 1930, Germany launched the first full landscape architecture graduate programme. The first part of this chapter sketches out the multifaceted debate that preceded the decision for Berlin Agricultural College to develop that programme. The second part presents several institutions of higher education that had incorporated elements of garden design and public urban green planning into architectural curricula decades earlier. Progress made in establishing design and planning courses was due both to the commitment of individuals and to coordinated action within personal networks. Considering the different opportunities that arose after 1900 to establish landscape architectural education, the chapter presents evidence that affiliating the field with the life sciences in 1930 represented merely one of several options. The diversity of developments points to several research desiderates and to lines of tradition that are relevant for an understanding of German academic landscape architecture today.
